As a part of an initiative to return the responsibility for education to the local First Nation Communities, this primary school was constructed in the centre of the Village of Old Massett on the northern tip of the islands of Haida Gwaii. The design was inspired by certain characteristics of the traditional longhouse, but integrated with the functional requirements of a contemporary school and community facility. Much of the construction of the building was undertaken with local labour and materials, and artists of the community contributed their talents to integrate the art into the fabric of the building.
The project was completed under Greg’s predecessor firm, Acton Johnson Ostry Architects.
